Message: I think you will find that William Ewart, after whom Gladstone was named, was the brother of Peter Ewart, graduate of Edinburgh University. He worked with Boulton and Watt on the development of the steam engine and installed Manchester's first rotary engine in Waterhouses's Mill. He became a partner at Quarry Bank Mill bringing the engineering skill that Samuel Greg that Samuel Greg, the founder lacked.He subsequently set up in business for himself, thus moving up a step in the social hierarchy.
